the MAXXI - National Arts Museum of the XXI century
MAXXI Dialogues with the city - by Laura Cherubini
first meeting Massimo Bartolini
on February the 12nd 2008
18 p.m.
performance 19 p.m.

The initiative includes different "meetings", each of them has a site specific installation as protagonist, they are installations realized by contemporary international artists. The project has the aim to signal the new cultural reality of MAXXI - the new museum realized by the anglo iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, - and to put it in relation with the city context. From February MAXXI Dialogues with the City will accompany all the phases that will precede the museum opening, that should be in 2009 on spring; this museum will be the first in Italy devoted to art, contemporary architecture and contemporary researches.

The first event, visible until the 30th of March 2008, is devoted to Massimo Bartolini. The artist has created an installation using light, immaterial element constituted by pure energy. The art-work will be on the facade of the MAXXI, in close relation with the new museum and with the city. Light has a very important role in many of his projects: it is in the dazzling pavement of a bamboo hut (Biennial of Venice, 1999), in the ceiling of a room, originating an ethereal atmosphere (Rotonda della Besana, Milan, 2000) and it becomes tangible in the luminous doors, introduced in the House of Masaccio (1998), where the thresholds appear incandescent.

Finally, a light beam crosses the depth of a shaft heading for the sky in "Dalla testa ai piedi", the unique work with light realized outside (Atlantis, Siena, 1998). Moreover Massimo Bartolini is present in the collection of the MAXXI with the work Mixing Parfums, with which in 2000 he won the Prize for the Young Italian Art: two spaces, characterized by different smells, and connected by a revolving luminous door.

Massimo Bartolini is born in Cecina (Livorno) in 1962, where he lives and works. He has exhibited in Italy and abroad; he has participated to numerous international exhibitions, like Manifesta 4 (Frankfurt, 2002), the LI and the XLVIII International Art Exhibition, Biennial of Venice (in 2005 and 1999). Between the personal exhibitions: Museu Serralves - Museu de Arte Contemporanea, Porto, 2007; Ikon Gallery - Ikon Eastside, Birmingham, Great Britain, 2007; GAM - Civic gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Turin, 2005; Centre for the Contemporary Art Luigi Pecci, Prato, 2003; StŠdtisches Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach, Germany, 2003; Forum Kunst Rottweil, Rottweil, Germany, 2000; Masaccio house Centre for the Contemporary Art, San Giovanni Valdarno, 1998; Teseco Foundation for the Art, Pisa, 1997. Between the collectives: Où? Scenes du Sud: Espagne, Italie, Portugal, Carrè d' Art - Musée d' Art Contemporain de Nimes, Nimes, France, 2007; Domestic Irony. A curious look between the Italian private collections, Museion - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Bolzano, 2007; Ecstasy: In and About Altered States, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, USA, 2005.
