Alessandro Lupi. Perception

This autumn at Palazzo Ducale in Genova the exhibition “Perception” of Alessandro Lupi, an artist inspired by light, fundamental elemento of his work, together with sound and space.

The center of Alessandro Lupi’s research lies on light, developing in installations, photography, video art and new media in which color, light and space fuse their selves dynamically. Lupi uses to create his works, called “Densita fluorescenti (Fluorescent Densities), polyamide threads painted one by one with fluorescent paint and/or photoluminescent illuminated by black light. Subjects are often three-dimensional bodies that dialogue with the space in a kinetic or static way, sometimes through sounds expressly composed for the work by Danilo Rolle. Every work appears to create its own world, concentrating on the idea of “inversion”, that is, on the possibility of offering to the spectator the opposite point of view from the expected or predicted one. In his works the dichotomy of opposite situations, like exterior-interior, freedom-prison or life-death are annulated by the almost contemporary perception of these two aspects without, nevertheless, favoring any perceptive or hierarchic prevalence.

Perception is an exhibition about the multiple possibilities of perception. In particular, several works investigate the relationship between time and space.
It is possible to speak of luminous, kinetic and interactive works that reveal an aesthetic of the scientific knowledge and therefore want to break the barriers of art, that is not an end in itself.

The artist
My artistic career focused on the invention of new techniques such as fluorescent densities (sculptures made of strings painted with special fluorescent pigments and illuminated with black light) or on creating illusions.

“Seconds” is a work about time and the mutability of its visual perception:
In a matt black panel 60 fluorescent hands are installed, representing the seconds. The hands operate in two phases. In the first phase, the seconds go asynchronous, giving, both visually and soundly, a clear sense of fragmentation of time, stimulating a reflection on the normal way of looking at the tools that mark our lives.
In the second phase the seconds stop and start again in a synchronous way with a very defined and articulated sound. In both phases the hands generate evolving abstract figures, always different.

“B /N” is a work focusing on the perception and construction of some images in the user mind.
This work represents a body, the kinetic dimension builds in the imagination of the viewer, the form and the presence of the work in the space, but also the abstract material that composes it.
The light enters the work that is a corner, I studied two walls, one white and one black, that allow an opposite perception of the shape itself in a dialectic of empty / full.
The use of white and black in motion gives a subjective view, which in some cases make users perceive colors even if they are not present, suggesting all the gradations of light that our eye does not perceive normally.
