From 6 p.m. on Saturday 7 July 2012, Comune di Morterone and the Associazione Culturale
Amici di Morterone will be opening the exhibition Art Nature Poetry. Projects in Morterone 2012.
The evening will commence at 6 p.m. with the opening of the Alan Charlton. Grey Paintings
exhibition in the Sala Municipale. This will be followed at 7 p.m. by the presentation of the work
by Nicola Carrino, Ricostruttivo 2010. Progetto Paesaggio Morterone, 2010-2012 and three
works by Niele Toroni entitled Impronte di pennello n.50 a intervalli regolari di 30 cm. 10 Impronte
di fuoco, made specially for the occasion.

At 9 p.m. La porte s’envole, work by François Morellet, will be presented together with projections
of four light works by Michel Verjux entitled Nocturne à Morterone.
As part of this event, Alan Charlton will be showing six grey monochrome canvases measuring
121.5 x 121.5 cm, which create a dialogue between each other, while also interacting with the
space around them, making it an essential part of the English artist’s creative action.
In the space in front of a building looking out towards the valley, Nicola Carrino has installed his
Ricostruttivo 2010. Progetto Paesaggio Morterone, 2010-2012 which consists of nine modules,
each measuring 300 x 75 x 75 cm, six in ground stainless steel and three in weathering steel. The
project includes the creation of a unified composition on a modular grid so that the work can relate
in a dialectic manner with the architectural dimension of the house and with the timeless vastness of
the valley landscape below.
Niele Toroni has created three works entitled Impronte di pennello n.50 a intervalli regolari di 30
cm. 10 impronte di fuoco: these impressions take up a method adopted by the artist since 1967,
appearing as geometrical forms that are never identical but always different and intentionally
impersonal. Another work, Morterone Paris même combat, will also be shown.
Here François Morellet has worked directly on the façade of the house where he has made La
porte s’envole, 261 x 138 cm, which consists of two blue neon elements placed on one of the
doors in a way that places its perimeter off centre, shifting its rectangular shape into an oblique
position, and giving it an upward movement.
Michel Verjux has designed the work Nocturne à Morterone which consists of four luminous
projections on the façades of as many buildings in different parts of the valley. He has done so in such a way that, from the same observation point, one can take in all of them at a glance, “within
the immense nocturnal sky”.

The Art Nature Poetry. Projects in Morterone initiative has emerged from a conception of the
artistic process as an act of knowledge, and not as a prevaricating form of operative alterity. From
this point of view it is closely tied to the world of Natura Naturans, a poetic-philosophical
conception that originally arose right here in Morterone – an uncontaminated hollow at the foot of
the Resegone, on the side opposite Lecco – and for many years now at the centre of Carlo
Invernizzi’s musings.
The idea of putting on contemporary art exhibitions in Morterone originally came about in the mid-
1980s from an idea of Epicarmo and Sostene Invernizzi who, with a few friends, wanted – and still
want – the Morterone community to rediscover and experience its own roots in a creative manner,
adorning its environment with works of art that, while fully respecting its pristine state, can confer
authentic beauty upon it.

The Art Nature Poetry. Projects in Morterone 2012 exhibition is conceptually and concretely linked
to the shows put on in Morterone in 1988, 2006 and 2010. Amongst other things, these included
a number of (still extant) works installed in the open air by Gianni Asdrubali, Francesco Candeloro,
Carlo Ciussi, Lucilla Catania, Gianni Colombo, Igino Legnaghi, Pino Pinelli, Bruno Querci, Ulrich
Rückriem, Nelio Sonego, Mauro Staccioli, David Tremlett, Grazia Varisco, Rudi Wach and, in the
exhibition room of the Palazzo Municipale, works by Italian and foreign artists who have always
frequented and loved the land and community of Morterone. These include Rodolfo Aricò,
Dadamaino, Riccardo De Marchi, Lesley Foxcroft, Mario Nigro, Günter Umberg and Elisabeth
Vary.
“Works of art in the open air,” as Francesca Pola has written, “in the heart of nature, on the walls
of buildings, dotted around among the houses in the village. Some of the distinctive features of
Morterone need to be taken into consideration especially when considering the multi-year project to
create a form of permanent epistemological dialogue between art, poetry, and nature in this manmade
and natural setting”.
