ENEL CONTEMPORANEA 2008

THE ARCHITECTS COLLECTIVE A12 CREATE A HIDDEN GARDEN SUBMERGED IN THE VENETIAN LAGOON FOR ENEL CONTEMPORANEA 2008

• For the first time, Enel Contemporanea will be present in the city of Venice, with a sitespecific
installation designed by the architectural group A12 in the Viale dei Giardini
Pubblici, close to the site of the Biennale
• The installation is designed to coincide with the 11th International Architecture
Exhibition, and will run from 13th September to 23rd November 2008
• Curated by Francesco Bonami, Enel Contemporanea is a series of public art
commissions by international artists on the theme of energy
• After installations by the artists collective assume vivid astro focus and A12, the American artist Jeffrey Inaba will close the 2008 edition of Enel Contemporanea with
an installation at the Policlinico Umberto I in Rome from 13th November 2008 to 13th
February 2009.

Venice, September 2008 – Enel Contemporanea moves to Venice for the first time with the
project Deep Garden, a site-specific public installation by the young Italian artists’ collective
A12. The installation, created to coincide with the 11th International Architecture
Exhibition of the Venice Biennial, will be on display from 13th September to 23rd
November 2008.

Now in its second edition, Enel Contemporanea is the project promoted by Enel (Italy’s largest
power company and the second-largest quoted utility in Europe). Each year, internationally
acclaimed artists are commissioned to create a series of installations on the theme of energy
(www.enel.it/enelcontemporanea).
Following the installations by assume vivid astro focus in Rome and A12 in Venice, Enel
Contemporanea 2008 will conclude with an installation by American artist Jeffrey Inaba at the
Policlinico Umberto I in Rome, the main hospital in the capital and one of the largest in Europe,
from 13th November 2008 to 13th February 2009.
The 2007 edition, involved English artist Angela Bulloch, with an evocative lunar eclipse over
the Ara Pacis in Rome (Repeat Refrain), Danish artist Jeppe Hein, with an interactive water
fountain (Hexagonal Water Pavilion) in the Garbatella district and, finally, the Italian Patrick
Tuttofuoco, with a major installation-cum-building site in Piazza del Popolo (Future City)
