The role of light in the urban lighting has no more a unique functional characteristic but also a "critical" one, that is able to give prominence to the architectural particularities of the buildings.
Lighting has become really important in the field of planning. In Italy it is one of the first volumes to analyze role and functions of light, criterions of the project, materials and technologies. In this way the book offers, besides, a review and an analysis of the most meaningful realizations: from the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan, to the Palace of Caserta, to Notre Dame de Paris

Published by FrancoAngeli, Milan.

The project of lighting gives the possibility of a different reading of the object of our vision: sculpture, architecture or urban space. Lighting, in this sense, means considering another vision of the city, by night, without creating "something else" but reflecting on the potential expressive capacities, underlying the strength points of the city. The artificial lighting becomes a powerful critic sign, which defines spaces and creates interesting interpretative variations, preserving at the same time the historic heritage.
Designing the illumination of an architecture or an urban environment means to work on the effect, on the intensity, on the atmospheres that could inspire, underlying its value and identifying the architectural characteristics. So lighting also means bringing to light the object of vision’s urban character, giving it an identity, a sense of belonging, that is difficult to be perceived by day.

The volume is addressed to lighting designers and architects, it analyses the outdoor lighting project from a philosophical point of view, criterions and methodology, products and available technologies, with a series of images and explanatory sketches. The text concludes with the analysis of a series of interesting projectual cases.

Donatella Ravizza – Architect, is interested in lighting, this special interest refers also to the development of an activity of search, planning and consulting services to both public and private clients. She is also engaged for what concerns the initiatives for the popularization of the "culture of the light"; she also teaches in various athenaeums and institutes of formation, with lesson and seminars about the natural and artificial lighting.
An author of many books, in 2001 she published always for FrancoAngeli the volume entitled Progettare con la luce, now at its second edition.

Summing up the volume starts by introducing the concept pf humanistic light, light as critical sign, against the excessive use of lights and colours. The book goes ahead with a section dedicated to the roles and functions of light in the town, then the theme of the lighting project’s methodology.
There is also a specific section about materials and technologies, such as light sources, dynamic light, lighting fixtures, remote-source lighting systems, and many others.
The final chapter gets to the heart of some exemplary realizations, such as Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio, Milan; Notre-Dame, Parigi; Duomo di Milano; Abbazia di San Galgano; Reggia di Caserta and many others.
