Ecomondo 2012

The platform for green solutions

At Rimini Fiera from November 7th to 10th the top names of the Green Economy will once again meet at Rimini Fiera, on the occasion of ECOMONDO 2012, the 16th International Trade Fair on Material & Energy Recovery & Sustainable Development.

´Sustainable City´ is back for its 6th edition at ECOMONDO 2012, supported by the sector´s leading companies, by Angelo Grassi, one of Europe´s best-known landscape architects, and a high-profile promotional campaign on the media and social networks. ECOMONDO will be held simultaneously with the 6th edition of KEY ENERGY international expo for sustainable energy and mobility, as well as COOPERAMBIENTE, which for five years has been the event that showcases the best experiences of cooperation on environments issues.

Rimini Fiera business unit manager Simone Castelli explains, “We are working following the logic of an industrial chain or cycle – to multiply business opportunities for trade members. ECOMONDO is the marketplace for sustainability and, once again in 2012, we shall increase its international profile, focussing on the most interesting markets, such as those of Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean area and North Africa. Not to mention the traditionally more receptive nations (Germany, France, Spain) and the promising markets of Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and Brazil.”

From Wednesday 7th to Saturday 10th November the Rimini expo centre will organize what is in fact the leading Italian expo and one of the very top in Europe, for environmental sustainability issues (75,980 trade visitors in 2011, of whom 7,754 were foreign, with increases of 16.7 and 49% respectively on 2010).

Other figures show the scale of the Rimini Fiera event, which is supported and promoted by all the institutional bodies involved in the environment world. Last year, 1,200 companies took part in the expo, 156 conferences were organized with 700 speakers and 7,200 participants, over 2,000 business meetings scheduled prior to the event and 127 million contacts made with the press campaign.

The expo layout has been confirmed in all 16 halls of the expo centre, where ECOMONDO will feature the special sections WASTE (complete waste cycle), RECLAIM EXPO (technology for the remediation of contaminated sites), INERTECH (construction and demolition waste), ORO BLU (treatment and re-use of wastewater), AIR (technologies for monitoring air quality) and SUSTAINABLE TOWNS (the best projects for the so-called “smart cities”).

The 2012 edition of ´Sustainable City´ provides a real ´cross-section´ of cities in which companies will propose the most innovative solutions for highlighting the Smart Grid concept, the system in which all the networks contribute actively to the creation of databases, indicators and projects that improve the city from an environmental, social and economic point of view. The Italian road to smart cities.
In the centre of the halls, the Agora zone, a large structure with an urban profile and the symbol of these cities, with a large structure covered in green: the project, by well-known designer Angelo Grassi, will feature four areas, divided into other zones, forming four urban districts, each characterized by a symbolic material. There will also be a Bio-lake: the intelligent and sustainable response to many landscape and town planning requirements, for independent management and low maintenance costs. The layout will be completed by wind turbines, solar street lamps, 1,500 square metres of green areas, car parks, roads, hills, trees and hedges.

The companies that are the key players of ´Sustainable City´ are involved in sectors that include Building (design, revamping, interior habitat), Waste (chain, re-use), Energy (generation, saving, accumulation), Mobility (biofuel, zero emission, logistics, air quality, car sharing/pooling) and Social-Education (Intercultural, courses of design and training with certificates and credits), Communication (ICT, indicators), Leisure time (landscaped area, zero-mile food, places of aggregation). Therefore, a great innovation workshop, representing an economic chain, a place in which Public Administrations and private investors meet actively to build a smart city.
